Session Breakdown.

Philosophy.

My coaching philosophy is focused on ensuring that the players, whatever the age and ability, are engaged, challenged, and constantly kept on a football during sessions. I believe it is vital that children in particular spend as much time as possible with a ball at their feet, in a competitive and fun environment where key core skills are developed through small game situations and diverse drills. Coaching should be about dynamic education, removing static "cone to cone" drills and instead a style that allows every child the opportunity to feel involved in the session, constantly running around, and learning quickly from any mistakes they or others make through clear communication and a considered approach to their wellbeing and enjoyment.

Ages Coached: 4 to 11 Years and 14 to 18 Years

Gender: Boys and Girls

Style: Direct football coaching, summer events, school holiday camps, multi-activity days and termly school coaching.

Session.

A coaching session is broken down into some key components taking into regard skill level, age, time available, and parent/activity expectations. Below are the sections that I enjoy working through to get the most from the children:

  • Quick Intro

  • Non-Football Warm Up

  • Traditional Football Warm Up

  • Basic Passing, Shooting, Technical drill

  • Specific Mini Games, Challenges, Races & Team Work

  • Small game situation with basic scenarios and rotated positions

  • Quick cool down

  • Session Chat

  • Everyone helps clear up

Quick Intro:

2 Minutes - Introduction to myself, my background, the session, and a little fun game asking questions about favourite football teams, players, and names.

Non-Football Warm Up:

5 minutes - Mini game introducing tag, hand eye co-ordination, movement, communication, building friendships all away from a football to begin with.

Traditional Football Warm Up:

5 Minutes - Make the children feel professional by doing a proper warm up, dynamic movement, talk about being safe on a football pitch, and get them to mimic or pretend to be their favourite footballers as they prepare for the session.

Basic Drills:

10 Minutes - Session specific drill, working on key football components. Reduce the number of cones, and ensure every child doesn't stand still for more than 5 seconds at a time.

Mini Games:

15 Minutes -Specific small games or matches with 5-6 players in each game. Get them and the ball moving. Run team challenges against the other groups to encourage team work and communication.

Small Game Situations:

30 Minutes - Most important part of the session is giving the children freedom to play football, express themselves, run around and compete with each other. Vital to make sure every player is involved and positions are re-arranged to give fair playing time to outfield players. Will add in and run small fun scenarios such as "Left Foot Only", "Silent Football", and "Skill School."

Cool Down & Debrief

3 Minutes - Quick cool down and session chat about what they liked and would like to do or try next time. Important to get feedback from the kids.

Clear Up:

2 Minutes - Simple clear up of equipment. Everyone takes part and responsibility for leaving the playing area clean and tidy
